Pow Pow @ Moments

December tun hot on Friday 13th when Pow Pow, i. e. Mr Brown and Junior Carl played in Bremen at Club Moments. Many very tall people were at the venue when I arrived and King Ralph was playing the opening for the evening. The vibe was very nice and everyone danced to their hearts' content, especially when the veteran sound, who's other members were travelling somewhere in the South of Europe, started heating up the turn tables and the massive, getting everyone to interact in their usual style and fashion as you can see in the photos.

Later DJ Laye played the cool out and people agreed that the event was making them look forward to Christmas Eve when Dancehall CoNNect would once again go down at Club Moments. To see the full album you can click here. Of course, you are welcome to tag yourself.

Steel Pulse in Hamburg

The greatest reggae band of our time had one show in Germany, in Hamburg! I was fortunate enough to be invited by the wonderful Sidney Mills to see the soundcheck and to have a chat before the show. It was a pleasure also to see Jerry "Saxman" Johnson for the first time, who has been touring with Steel Pulse for a while. If you know me, you know that I love the sax and it adds another dimension to the live sound of Steel Pulse. I loved the way David Hinds and Jerry "fought" for their place on stage. Altogether, the show was very well put together and perfectly played. Big ups to Steel Pulse!

For me the most emotional moment was David Hinds' introduction of the song "Put Your Hoodies On" which he wrote in rememberance and honour of Trayvon Martin. You can listen to it here . You can check out all of Steel Pulse's news and David Hinds' blog on their website.

A special mention goes to Peter, who came all the way from Denmark to see Steel Pulse's only show in Europe for this tour!

Last but not least: A big "Thank you!" to Christoph Tewes of Revelation Concerts as always. You are the best! Also, please check this comprehensive review written by Gardy and photgraphed by Silverback published on ReggaeVille.

Reggae Nights # 123

Reggae Nights was conveniently held one day after my birthday at Magazinkeller so I was able to celebrate non-stop from Tuesday, October 1 through to the early hours of Thursday morning! Roots Ashanti played the latest in reggae and dancehall (yes, they can!) and mixed in some good old hits. It was great and I could not stop dancing!

The guest Destination Sound from Göttingen played some dub sounds in between and I had a chance to chill with all of you lovely people at Reggae Nights! Thanks to Hjalmar for the bottle of champagne, to Ben for all the fog which made it hard for my camera to focus, to Rigo for taking my picture (and the invite for Friday) and to all of you for dancing with me and making it a wonderful night out!

Thank You, Sheriff & All @ ReggaeJam

This beautiful little princess was standing on a step inside the crowded pit watching Chronixx' wonderful performance. It's my favourite photo of this year's ReggaeJam and I am sharing it for three reasons:

Firstly, I'd like to know who she is! I couldn't see her parents as the pit was absolutely packed. Please e-mail me! Secondly, I'd like to thank everyone who made this last weekend a wonderful one! Unfortunately, I could not be there for the closing ceremony but hopefully I will be there again next year for the 20th anniversary of ReggaeJam!

And last, but not least, I would like to show this photo as an example of natural beauty. I hope this young lady will keep shining as the star she is - naturally!

More of my photos are to follow soon.

Reggae By The River Part 3

Reggae by the River was literally ON the river this time around. But... Let me start at the beginning: First of all, the selectors and organisers met with Queen Easy at the venue Hafenklang, near Fischmarkt in Hamburg to catch up on things, set up the sound system and eat.

We then walked from the venue along the harbour to the quay to take a tour on the boat "Hedi" around the Hamburg port. And luckily, the weather was on our side! It was a sunny day even though it was still a little cold outside.

On the boat RootzFaya alongside Selecta Moe were selecting foundation tunes from Ska to RockSteady and Reggae all on vinyl while the boat was rocking away through the port. Check out the turn-table base hanging off leather straps! Even those who don't usually listen to the station but took part in the public boat ride were taking in the positive vibrations and we all enjoyed a glorious sunset with a rainbow in the distance. I tried to capture this event as best I could with my amateur lens because I was still not able to replace the one I broke in an accident last year.

In attendance were the artists Lilian Gold, Donald Minott, Caroline Castelli aka Sista Caro, Dirk IRebel, Armando Quattrone, Fullanny with the Bosh Crew and Le Prince, Cunnie Budd and the selectors Mr. Feelgood, RootzFaya (Elwo and CleanFaceRasta), Sam U Roy, DJ Fonz and Yendis, who is a member of the management, Dags, who is a member of the promo team and the operator Queenie. LadyCoopz, who is also a selectress on ReggaeSpace came as a guests along with all other regular listeners RoRo, Netta, Guddy, Colognemassive, Yardriddim, Vienna, Anne de Ruiter, Anne Heese, Andrea Luise, Sista Gardy, Reggaelady, Climbnotrees, Jahmix, Tosh, Micho, Crucial B, Rastababskie, Strobel, Anja, Andre, Micha, Imsa, Robby, Malik and Mike.

Again the show was transmitted live via the internet on ReggaeSpace and I was happy to see many of the regular ReggaeSpacers and other people from Hamburg again after more than a year. What a wonderful vibe it was! Big thanks to Queen Easy for organising this meeting third time in a row and once again also to Micho for the delicious vegetarian food! Hhhmmm...

Busy Signal • Gentleman • Silly Walks

Busy in Hamburg on March 28, 2013! This was my hype from the beginning of the year and nobody I knew was actually sure he would really be able to come! This visit was long overdue after the last album “Reggae Music Again” he had put out in 2012 was a huge hit while he was being held and under examination in the US on charges from many years ago.

So when I saw photos of Busy traveling to Germany on the same plane as Raging Fyah at the beginning of that week I was happy and loaded my camera ready to shoot this event! Unfortunately, I didn’t remember they are very punctual at the venue Fabrik in Hamburg. So I was late for/missed House of Riddim Band backing Perfect Giddimani. I just managed to get one photo of Perfect chilling backstage before they headed off to their next stop.

The place was packed out! Everyone wanted to see Busy perform to the sounds of the High Voltage Band who are Lamont Savory on guitar, Kirk Bennett on drums, Aeion Hoilett on bass and Brenton Mesado on keys from Jamaica. Busy tweeted later: “Germany get flattened!! Hott Ed!!” and I must say, it’s true!

There was talk before of a surprise guest before the show and this guest was waiting in the wings watching Busy perform. It turned out to be the one and only true “Germaican”: Gentleman! But before he came on stage Silly Walks Discotheque played such a wicked set including tunes from their latest hit albums “Storms of Life” and the “Honey Pot Riddim” while Gentleman and Busy posed for photos and did some interviews backstage.

Busy Signal @ Fabrik on March 28, 2013

Then it was time for Gentleman! This man always brings the crowd to the boil simply by his presence. It was so nice to see him live and direct in a smaller venue. Everyone was enjoying the vibes to a maximum!

Since it was a little difficult to get around the place during the shows I didn’t get to take photos of anyone in the audience until the very end. I had seen so many people I know but I didn’t catch them all on camera. So I hope to see you all this week for the Raging Fyah show!

Lady Lou

On March 23 and 24 I was invited to photograph a burlesque dance workshop here in Bremen which was organised by Lilla. The instructor was Lady Lou who resides in Berlin where she performs regularly. Her website is LadyLouBurlesque.com where you can find many extraordinary photographs of her in stage dress.

Lilla and Lady Lou

There will be more workshops in Bremen. To find out more check out Burlesque.Bremen on facebook for dates, other information and some more photos of this workshop. I will also post more photos on my facebook page.

Reggae Nights # 118

Reggae Nights on February 9, 2013 took place at Pixl again. I was late due to other commitments and quite a few people had already left when I arrived in the early hours. The mood was great as usual and I got to dance quite a bit with my camera. Check the pics:

Then next Reggae Nights event will be held at Magazinkeller on April 13 and is entitled Reggae Nights Sound Conference. See you all there! :-)

Reggae Nights # 117 ✶❉ ☃ ❉✶ Christmas Edition

I couldn't miss the Christmas edition of Reggae Nights on December 25! It was nice to see everyone in good spirits again even though I reached there late. Calabash and Irie FX were on the decks alongside the organisers Roots Ashanti! It was rather foggy in the venue Pixl and somehow I managed to turn off the autofocus on my lens... but got some focussed images after all.

Many thanks to my dancers and special BIG UP to Ken and the South African crew! Hope to see you all again at the next Reggae Nights on February 9 at the same venue! It was a nice vibe!

Saving the photos I have just realised that this is a little anniversary for me! It's the 50 Reggae Nights I have photographed! Doesn't time fly! :-)
